Easter at Camp Coorong PDF Print E-mail

You may have missed a great Easter Camp on the Coorong supported by many Congress folk who enjoyed fellowship and spiritual challenge as well as the beauty of the Coorong and the opportunity to learn some of the local culture; basket weaving and flower making. What was noticeable was the lack of whitefellas! The invitations went out . . . . One can't help thinking about another feast in the New Testament. So there were problems! I know tenting wasn't everyone's idea of a weekend away. Some of us are getting on and need our comforts. And the venue changed (for the better) at the last moment. Well there can now be a choice other than tenting and self catering. Camp Coorong has modern facilities for sleeping and showering. So consider coming next year and or inviting groups in churches you know. Keep your eyes open for information and pray for the traditional owners of the Coorong and all who live there as they face the effects of the drying river and water courses.

Here are some personal reflections......
Ernest Sorenson reports -

The best thing about the camp was being able to relax, chat and laugh with friends from Pt Augusta, Salisbury and the Ngarrindjeri region, and many of us spent hours talking while we inexpertly wove traditional Ngarrindjeri baskets or mats under Aunty Ellen Trevorrow's gentle direction. The worship sessions and the hilarious concert compered by Aunty Eva were other highlights. More seriously, I was impressed as I listened during a mealtime to some young people whose grasp of the issues surrounding the National Apology to the Stolen Generations was very evident.

The Saturday of the camp was a crisp, beautiful day after the recent heatwave, and what better way to spend it than by walking through the sand hills to the pristine beach? Although there had been hiccups in organising the camp, especially the change of venue less than a month before Easter, we all worked together well and there was a friendly, cooperative spirit from start to finish. It was a great way to participate in and celebrate Easter! - Lyn Leane

Journey to Kalparrin Easter camp went further than I could have imagined all the way to the heartland of Camp Coorong. The weekend was exceptional as the various groups came together and shared community and hospitality. My family group including Leanne, my parents and brother and especially my three boys, Josh, Tim and Nathan ( 8 years , 6yrs and 4yrs) all experienced a wonderful time, exploring local crafts and especially the crossing of the Coorong to the sea for several of us. We thoroughly enjoyed the worship and community times and are looking forward to next year's camp to continue our friendships made and renewed at camp this year. The two most outstanding aspects of the camp were the sense of whole community with nearly all ages possible present at camp which provided a wholeness to the experience and on the other side how this drought has sadly seriously affected the health of the Coorong. The whole camp experience was a great way to celebrate Easter and we all look forward to next year.
