What is the Highbury St Fund?

When the Prospect Uniting Church in Highbury Street closed just before the new millennium, the remaining members of the congregation decided that the money from the sale of the property would go into ministry rather than other buildings. The people of this suburban congregation had become aware of new migrant ethnic churches which were developing nearby, and also in many other communities in Adelaide. A small group considered this for some time and decided they wanted to support the established and emerging leaders of these communities in the area of continuing (usually theological) education and in-service training.   The Highbury Street Fund (HSF) is the result of this legacy and will continue to make an impact in the Christian community in South Australia. The HSF began operating from January 2002.

Since that time other ways for Christians of diverse ethnic backgrounds to be church have emerged in South Australia. These include new autonomous or denominationally-linked faith communities, and also groups and individuals joining existing Uniting Church congregations.   In addition to this, those participating in church life now include temporary residents, e.g. international students, and sometimes their accompanying spouses or other family members.

Aim of the Fund

The main goal of the HSF is therefore to support leadership development across this variety of expressions of church via appropriate education and training.

Money is generally distributed twice each year from the interest gained from the capital fund.   (Some funds may occasionally be distributed at other times).   The money is managed in the Common Fund of the Presbytery and Synod of the Uniting Church in South Australia.   Funds are allocated by the Highbury Street Fund (HSF) Committee.

Applications for funds are due on May 15 and October 31 each year.  An interview may take place.  Applicants will be informed of the result of their application within one month of these dates.
