During Lent 2009, the Uniting Church in South Australia raised $45,000 through its 34^th Annual Lenten Appeal. This Appeal coincided with the Victorian Bushfire Appeal which meant that giving to the Lenten Appeal in 2009 was less than usual. Even so, $10,000 was made available to the Papua New Guinea Microfinance Project, $18,000 to resourcing church workers and ministers in North Luzon and $15,000 to supporting Congress Youth in Oodnadatta. 

Microfinance in Papua New Guinea

In PNG, the Lenten Appeal supported the work initiated by Ruth Sellick of Western Link UC in microfinance programmes, empowering Papua New Guinean women in small scale income generation projects including sewing and raising chickens. Ruth is available to speak about this project, which is administered through Uniting World Relief and Development. Resourcing church workers and ministers in North Luzon

In the Philippines, the Lenten Appeal project assisted in developing the ministry capacity of church workers and ministers in North Luzon at the request of our partner church, the North Luzon Jurisdiction of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines.

Supporting Congress youth in Oodnadatta

The 2009 Lenten Appeal supported UAICC, enabling the training of Sunday School teachers and youth leaders and the provision of equipment for this work.
