The GKI church in West Papua invited UCA-SA to engage with them in the provision of medical facilities and health care training in our partnership area of the island Presbyteries of Biak and Numfor.
The 2007 Lenten Appeal raised funds toward the provision of a "Polyklinik" in remote Wansra, on the south of the Numfor Island, which will focus on maternal health care, delivery of babies, and some general medical needs including chest infections, tropical diseases and sores and malaria prevention.
The photos were taken during February 2010 during a visit to West Papua by members of Blackwood UC and Lyn Leane from the SA Synod MRN. Peter Muller from Blackwood UC nailed the first aluminium sheet to the roof, followed by representatives from the GKI on Numfor.
All materials have been sourced locally and within Indonesia, and the Klinik is locally owned and built. Construction was delayed due to the death of Ibu Jacoba Imbiri-Awom, who first coordinated the project on behalf of the GKI, and after whom it will be named upon completion, anticipated for May 2010. Pak Pdt Herman Awom has expressed his thanks to the UCA-SA for the provision of funds and encouragement over the years, and especially to Henley-Fulham UC congregation who put in a great deal of effort to provide a large amount of separate funding for this Klinik.
