Pastor Berlin Guerrero is a student minister of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. He was actively engaged in supporting marginalised people in metro Manila before being imprisoned during July 2007 in the Cavite Provincial Jail south west of Metro Manila. Pastor Berlin was detained on trumped up charges of murder which were later completely dismissed by the Supreme Court of the Philippines. During the time he spent in the jail, Pastor Berlin was supported by the UCCP to commence a ministry within the jail. This included running services, offering pastoral care to fellow prisoners, assisting with the production of recycled newspaper items (such as the cup itself) and initiating a jail choir.
Various members of the UCA in Australia were able to visit Pastor Berlin during his imprisonment, including representatives from the Uniting International Mission agency of the UCA in Sydney, and office bearers of the Justice and International Mission Unit of the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania. Australia. During July 2008, Big Year Out participants from the Presbytery of South Australia visited the Cavite Jail and took part in one of the services. During his imprisonment, many people across the globe participated in an international campaign to free Pastor Berlin, who was finally released to the care of his family during September 2008. Pastor Berlin is married with three children. The UCCP has continued the ministry he initiated within the jail.
